A man has been jailed for three years for buying a fake Viagra and a pill for which he was given a suspended sentence.
Cobra Pharma Inc, the manufacturer of the anti-impotence drug, has pleaded guilty in the US to conspiring with the National Institute of Health to prevent the introduction of counterfeit Viagra and other unlicensed drugs.
The company had received more than £1million in sales from the government in 2011, when the government had approved the drug. It would not face any possible punishment and it was allowed to go on sale in pharmacies after it was identified in the US that had no licence to sell the fake pills.
The company, which sells both generics and branded drugs, has also pleaded guilty in the US to importing unlicensed medicines into the United States, as well as manufacturing, selling and supplying the drugs. It is expected that the guilty pleas will result in a fine of about £1 million.
Cobra Pharma has received around £200 million from the US government in the form of government-supported loans.
The company would also face a fine of £20 million or more. It is believed the company had made about £100 million of the money from the government.
The company would not be allowed to continue making medicines that would have a negative effect on the health of its consumer. It would face an end to the supply chain and be charged with making sure that the pills, as well as any other unlicensed medicines, are sold to the public and not to the state.
A court in the United States has ordered the company to pay $3.5 million to the U. S. Food and Drug Administration to settle the charges. The company is not expected to face a fine of up to $1.2 million.
